Chasing Butterflies in the Sunlight is a wonderfully written and important piece of fiction. Set at a university campus in Nigeria, it tells the everyday adventures of an elder sister, Ronke and her younger brother, Bobo. Our two young protagonists get up to much mischief as we see the world through their little eyes. The book will be enjoyed by both adults and children (especially when read together). I read a chapter from the book every night to my five year old, who listened with eager anticipation to each installment of Ronke and Bobo’s escapades. Traditionally, there has been a dearth of children’s literature that tell the stories of young people from black, ethnic minority and ‘other’ communities, which is only recently being addressed. Within this context, Ms Oyenusi’s work adds to that growing cannon and what the Turkish writer, Elif Shafak, calls ‘the revolutionary power of diverse thought’. In her own small and significant way, by telling stories about the land she came from, Ms Oyenusi is also telling us stories of what it means to be human. Well done. We look forward to your next piece of work.
I read this book with my next door neighbours kids while I was babysitting. They enjoyed reading it with me, the pictures are great too.
Isaiah and the Orchestra of sounds is a good graphic novel to bring awareness to tinnitus and the affects it can have on a person. As Isaiah suffers through the book we see how the sounds become more and more distracting. I liked how she also discussed how prayer and how it was an important part of this family’s life. However, prayer and a doctor visit were both needed to help Isaiah. I think it is important to use the medical professionals who have studied these problems to help with healing.
Fourteen-year-old Isaiah lives a peaceful life in Baltimore, Maryland, until he is stricken with a horrible disease called tinnitus which he describes as an orchestra of sounds in his ear. There are the squeaks like a disrespectful mouse, the ringing like an old rotary phone, the sound of a bike chain that needs lubrication and many more annoying noises that make his skin crawl. Nothing Isaiah does seems to get rid of the “aliens in his head” and no one seems to understand the torture he is experiencing. This easy-to-read book with its vibrant, comic book characters and appealing graphic design gives readers a deeper understanding of tinnitus and leads them to be more compassionate towards those who suffer from this frustrating condition. Although there is no known cure for tinnitus, there are ways to get the brain to ignore the ringing sounds and loud noises. Included at the back of the book are resources, a glossary, solutions, treatment and additional sources for professional help for families with loved ones who are experiencing this condition.

Beautiful illustrations and amazing story. This is a book your child will love with insightful education on tinnitus. I highly recommend for anyone learning! This is a great book!
I enjoyed a glimpse into Ronke’s life growing up in Nigeria in the 1970s. Heartwarming, charming and perfect for all ages. I highly recommend!
These are really enjoyable to read and the watercolor illustrations are also excellent. Can be read aloud as bedtime stories or as a chapter book by a more advanced child. Add this one for diverse, own voices lit in a classroom library
This is a wonderful book about the charming Ronke. The setting takes place in Lagos Nigeria. This story gives the reader an insider view of the African culture. Must read.
Heart warming, beautifully written chapter book. My 7 year old really enjoyed reading this and was taken by all the descriptions of Nigeria. We love this book 😍
